Kastor & Pollux presents SQUAD: Pop-Up Shop and Exhibit

We’ve been BUSY BEES over the past couple of weeks in preparation for SQUAD – our first ever pop-up shop and art exhibit.

To celebrate the release of our F/W ’14 collection (the soft launch of our new website concept has been up for a month, now), we made about 150 clothing + jewelry pieces, on-boarded our baes/friends/babely friends to show some art, and drove to Costco with our pals from Common Base.

Running from October 16 to October 18 at Goodfellas Gallery in Toronto, SQUAD features works by Trevor Wheatley, Winnie Truong, Tyler Spangler, Dahae Song, Monica Moraru, Rosanna Peng, Olivia Genovese, and Jen Cheng. Come peruse art, shop our new arrivals, and hang out with us.

Opening reception is on Thursday, October 16 – starting at 8:30pm and going until VERY LATE. There will be a cash bar, sweet treats, and sweet tunes via Trophy Jones and Mikey Kniazeff. Plz RSVP HERE

If you can’t make it out on Thursday, Bianca and I (+ the rest of the K&P team) will be hanging around at Goodfellas on Friday, October 17th from 11am-8pm, and Saturday, October 18th from 11am-7pm; SO NO EXCUSES.

Say bye-bye to your sandals n slingbacks, ladies — make some room for COLD WEATHER SHOEZ!!! I know, I know, it’s sad to see summer go, blah blah blah, but life goes on. I do have to admit I forgot how to wear anything other than sneakers and slides since they’re the only kind of footwear I’ve touched for the last five months, so I had to write this (maybe biased, maybe not) pros and cons list to remind me how good and great and versatile ~*BOOTS*~ are. Be prepared to be swayed ~~~

– There are sOoOo many options! Different heights, heels, closures, colours, OH MY!!!
– They keep your feeties nice n toasty
– Many varieties can withstand rigorous activities such as hiking, biking, and others I refuse to mention because they do not rhyme with hiking
– Less probability of getting rocks stuck in there
– There is no need 4 pedicures
– If you pick knee/thigh high numbers, there is also no need to shave your legs. That’s almost half of your body you don’t have to groom

– For argument’s sake, there are none

WOW! Would ya look at that. There is literally nothing stopping you from crossing over to ~*BOOTS*~. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, we can finally enjoy the lovely emoji GIFs I spent all day making. Watch in awe as Dani and I do a can-can dance in the emoji rain, hair flip with emoji explosions, and high five amidst emoji claps — wearing Call It Spring ~*BOOTS*~, of course.

BACK(PACK) TO SCHOOL: 2 DIYs With Call It Spring

As we all know, backpacks are practical for a multitude of reasons. For one, they make riding a bike easy and breezy (because LOOK MA, NO HANDZ!), and secondly, they carry pretty much everything – from your morning/midday/afternoon/evening snacks to an extra pair of shoes (for when yr platforms start hurting yr feet). Honestly, the list could go on and on, but if it did, there would probably be no time for the actual purpose of this post – which is to provide you with !!TWO!! backpack DIYs for you to replicate on your very own Call It Spring backpacks! Ya gurlz, we got your back(pack)s.

A poem [following the AABB rhyming scheme because that’s all I know how to do):

This is a two part crafty collective
This is – dare I say it? – a back to school incentive.
In conjunction with our friends at Call It Spring,
We’ve DIY-ed some bags so you can impress your ting ;)
By starting off with a needle and thread,
These bags were once plain – but now they’re fancy instead.
Sewing and threading,
Gluing and embedding,
You’ll be the chicest gal at school,
Who will be sure to let everyone know that backpacks are cool.

Bye (4 realsies).

Call It Spring backpack
– Round beads of different sizes
– Needle & thread

Thread the needle and tie a knot at the end

Push the needle and thread through the inside of the backpack at any random spot

String a bead through

Push the needle and thread back through to the inside of the backpack and fasten with a knot. Repeat this process until you have sporadically placed BUBBLEZ across the entire surface of the backpack.

To create funky flower shapes, push the needle and thread through the inside of the backpack directly beside an existing bead

String on multiple small beads

Wrap the smaller beads around the bigger bead and fasten with a knot

Wear your bubbly new backpack with pride

Call It Spring backpack
– Plastic gems and rhinestones (we used broken up costume jewellery)
– Black acrylic paint
– Paintbrush
– Glue gun

Remove any logos or patches that may distract from the *sparkle*

Paint all your gems and let ‘em dry

Apply glue to the back of a gem

Place the gem somewhere/anywhere/everywhere on the surface of the backpack. Repeat this process until your backpack is ~icy~

Stunt on all your friends with your #veryrare black diamond-bedazzled backpack!!!

I spend approximately 100% of my talking time on the weather. I know that, you know that, my mom knows that. A normal human being would attempt to focus on other topics after coming to this realization, but I a) am not a normal human being and b) can think of no other logical way to explain why Dani and I spent last weekend taking 14 million selfies in multiple outfits in varied amounts of layers. With that being said (read: long-winded and inane forewarning aside), I present to you my most groundbreaking introductory sentence: weather is unpredictable. It can be scorching hot and humid one day and bitingly cold the next, and the last few weeks in Toronto can rubber-stamp it. How are you (Torontonians/North Americans [in general]) supposed to keep up?!?!

!Luckily! we have a solution for you: transitional footwear. We each took two different pairs of shoes and styled them for both summer and the impending fall season. I chose classic lace-up boots and sleek, strappy flats; while Dani chose metallic oxfords and ankle boots with a baby heel. Although they’re all closed-toe styles, they’re just as good for jumping into piles of autumn leaves as they are for jumping into pools. OK, maybe not, but you get the gist: Call It Spring can also be called summer and fall. LOLz.

Getting dressed and dolled up for a ~*soiree*~ is definitely a sacred girlytime ritual. In fact, if you calculated all the time we’ve spent on hair, makeup, and outfit planning, you’d probably get something like 5 years each. That’s insane to think about. We’ve dedicated almost a quarter of our lives to this art. I’m also over-exaggerating, like, a lot.

Anyway, more often than not, we leave the house in an all-black outfit because you can never really go wrong with one. They’re classy, mysterious, and cool without trying too hard — AMIRIGHT?! We also wear bras masquerading as real tops 99% of the time because #strongempoweredwomen. As for footwear, we usually lean towards high heels since we’re both lacking in the height department, but flats (like a good oxford or fancy slip on) can make you look just as put together for the nights you don’t plan on falling face-down on the dance floor.

Speaking of parties, we’re throwing a lil’ jam !!!this Friday!!! to celebrate the newly renovated Call It Spring Square One location. If you’re in Mississauga (or if you’re just a really dedicated human being), stop by from 5 pm – 9 pm for some sweet tunes, sweet snacks, sweet content 4 ur Instagram, sweet deals, and sweet, sweet hang-times with us!!! You might even get a cameo in the next Kastor & Pollux Youtube video *giggles*

See you there!!!

A Weekend in Vancouver with Kit & Ace

A couple of weeks ago, Dani and I hopped on a plane at YYZ with a dream and a cardigan, only to realize it is scorching hot on the west side of the country and the aforementioned sweater was completely useless. The dream, however, stayed alive. Since we were wee lil’ gals, we’ve been starry-eyed over the thought of visiting Vancouver — a city that plopped itself between picturesque mountains and the vast ocean. Because Toronto has neither of these things, we fell in love as soon as we landed.

We spent the first few days with tha homie Jen in Richmond. Since she’s originally from the city, she took us to her favourite spots: Daiso (a Japanese dollar store), Japadog (a Japanese hotdog-stand-turned-restaurant), late night Japanese food, and a slew of non-Japanese places ie Stanley Park for a Mean Girls screening. After having a lil’ taste of the suburb life, we lugged our suitcases to the heart of the city for a weekend with brand spankin’ new luxe basics brand Kit & Ace. Co-founder JJ and his sidekick Courtney planned an action-packed itinerary for us and our new blogger friendz, including but not limited to a party with ice cream, a bike ride along the sea wall with ice cream, and meaningful conversations with ice cream.

Overall, our trip was wonderful and wholesome and awesome blossom fabulous fantastic and we feel so #blessed to have seen Vancouver through the eyes of its very own. Thank you x 1 million to Kit & Ace for making it all possible!

PS Big ups to JoonMONEY for following us around with a camera all weekend. You da man!!!

As if my job couldn’t get any more #meta, I decided to cast myself as ~the face~ of MTV FORA’s back to cool/school DIY along with my partner-in-crime (duh), Bianca. Considering I’ve already optimized my word count on this matter over at FORA, ima save myself the trouble, direct you over there, and instead, share with you a few easily-embedded pictures taken by our (literal) third roommate, Vanessa, and a video by our very best friend/FORA’s resident videographer, Rosanna.

Hey everybody, check out our tans!!! We are glowing!!! Toronto’s been so sunny as of late it only took us a half-day in a park to get all golden. I want to look like this forever!!!

Anyway, yesterday after park hangz we stopped by the stu (read: studio — I’m just too ~hip and with it~ to use the full word) because blue backdrops compliment tanned skin. Lol. We shot our newest garb from Pixie Market and lemme tell you: there are very few online shops that mesh with our aesthetic as well as they do. We really like simple yet kOOky clothing because we are simple yet kOOky gals, and they’re one of the names that always, always delivers.

What’s In Our (Call It Spring) Bags?!

The items you carry around in your bag are often super indicative of who you are as a person – and since Bianca and I are notorious snackers, we really had to scale it back a notch and forgo the majority of the snacks (and the subsequent crumbs + wrappers) that frequent the bottom of our bags. While this is something we like to call a more #minimal approach to living, it is (mainly) a more informative/sensical guide to what our day-to-day essentials really are.

Since we’re constantly on the go (read: waking up late for work), a plethora of makeup strewn between our two bags is a given – but aside from the products that easily ~beautify~ our face, we’re also big on practicality: after all, working up a sweat carrying useless/non-edible/non-beautifying items is beneficial for absolutely no one.

Benelario bag via Call it Spring

When it comes to bags, I tend to opt for super spacious, boldly coloured carry-alls that can easily accommodate all my big-girl work-related items. This cylindrical bag not only does the trick, but is also cute, stylish, and monochromatic(!!!!) – the perfect pairing for the non-coloured clothing that has been slowly infiltrating my closet.

Of course, two of the hot ticket items in my bag are my two face necessities – liquid eyeliner and red lipstick – to make sure I always look and feel like myself. I also keep Benefit’s Porefessional Agent Zero Shine powder on hand (for times when life gets too stressful and I work up a sweat). Throwing makeup in my bag never feels like too much of a commitment, and oftentimes, I’ll have 5 different shades of red lipstick on me at any given time…just because.

Aside from all of that, my bag carries all the basic necessities – headphones (so I can listen to Future Islands on repeat), a wallet (so I can look longingly at my maxed-out credit cards etc), and Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 90 so I can capture all the fun moments I have with my one friend (Bianca). This might sound super self-deprecating, but I promise it’s not all that bad. My Moleskine sketchbook (covered in CIS stickers) ALSO comes with me everywhere I go, as I have always prefered creating to-do lists on paper vs. on my phone. Plus, there’s something really satisfying about conceptualizing ideas (or making notes to return my mom’s call(s)) in infinite spaces using pen and ink.

I guess generally speaking, my bag is pretty much all work and no play – but holographic details and stickers make it seem like a fun playground of both productivity and #beautytips.

Mini bag via Call It Spring

Unlike Danielle, I always go for an understated bag. It just seems like the sensible thing to do when your closet is filled to the brim with graphic prints and embroidered travesties. With that being said, I speak no word of a lie when I say I’ve been joined at the hip with this boxy Celine-esque number, since it’s a) black, b) spacious, and c) pretty chill.

However, though the bag remains the same, the contents are fickle. Of course, I always carry around essentials like my wallet, keys, business cards, and water bottle… but everything else is dependent on what I’m doing that day. For example, my snack of choice isn’t always an apple. Sometimes it’s an entire poutine. A hairbrush is optional if I actually washed my hair that morning. Sunglasses are only present if the sun is as well. Makeup is only in there if I remembered to put it in there. Anyway, you get the point. It doesn’t take much more than a minimalistic cross-body to please me.

K&P x Forever 21: Back To School Contest

Though it feels like summer’s just begun, the reality is that it’s almost over – and we say that in the least spirit-dampening way possible. For most of you, it’s time to take your golden tan straight to a classroom and trade your patio mojito for a coffee-dazzled all-nighter. School. The beautiful land of learning we all know and (subjectively) love. Sigh.

Dani and I have already completed our degrees and hung up our conventional educational institution hats foreva, so we’re excited about a whole whack of other things happening in September (all of which may or may not include jumping jacks, leap frog, cart wheels, and whatever else is happening in the above video). !BUT! we’ve got a lil’ surprise to get the rest of you amped up for Back To School: a Forever 21 contest! Whooooooo!!!

We’re giving away a $150 gift card to one lucky human. That’s 1.5 Forever 21 Benjamins to get swaggy for the new school year – which is quite the number considering the sale they got goin’ on right now. Like, look at this $18 backpack. Too good. Also, did I just say “get swaggy?” Lol.

Anyway, entering is simple. All you have to do is follow Forever 21 on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook through the Rafflecopter app at the bottom of this post. Then, leave a comment below with your favourite item from their Back To School collection. The contest closes in a week (Wednesday, August 13 at 11:59 PM) so hop to it ASAP/after you scroll through these dramatic tennis court photos.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

**Contest open to Canadian residents (excluding Quebec) only**

PS if you are a dancer, you should maybe probably also enter Forever 21’s other Back To School contest for a cool $10,000 scholarship. You’re welcome.
